An extensive 60-day journey through the Land Down Under has been cancelled in the wake of the tragic passing of an older lady who was left behind by the ship on a isolated coastal location.

Suzanne Rees had been hiking on the tropical location with shipmates from the cruise ship, but parted ways from the party for a rest. The vessel sailed away leaving her and returned several hours later after the ship staff became aware the passenger was missing.

A large-scale search operation found her body the subsequent day.

Officials are investigating the incident, together with police and the state coroner.

The CEO of the shipping company stated that guests and personnel on the vessel were notified that the rest of the voyage had been terminated due to the "unfortunate death and earlier technical problems".

Via official communication, he mentioned that travelers would be given a full refund, and said the operator was working "to organize the travel back of the passengers via private aircraft".

Authorities also released an updated announcement, and said they had "delivered a directive to the Commander" preventing any additional guests from boarding the vessel.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the ship in Cairns upon its arrival.

Timeline of Events

The liner first departed Cairns on the 24th of October, and was merely two days into the journey at the moment of the elderly woman's death. The tropical location was the opening port on the journey.

Travelers on board - who typically pay substantial amounts of money to participate in the cruise - were ferried there for a daily excursion with the option of trekking or snorkelling.

Relatives Statement

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "surprised and saddened that the liner left the location after an organised outing without my mum".

Through her comments, she described her mum as an "energetic elderly person" who was a member of a walking group.

"According to scant facts we have been informed, it seems that there was a lapse of attention and basic judgment," she said.

She continued that she desired the examination would be able to determine what "the organization should have done that might have saved Her existence".

"According to reports from the authorities that it was a very hot day, and mum became unwell on the uphill trek," she stated.

"She was asked her to return, unescorted. Then the vessel departed, apparently without performing a headcount.

"During some point in that chain of events, or not long after, mother died, alone."

Organization Position

Through an announcement, the Chief Executive verified that the organization was "working closely with investigators to assist their inquiry".
